Kultapinnoite taiteessa

Precious metals such as gold and silver have been used in art and decoration for several thousand years. Throughout time, gold has been valued for its rarity, beautiful color and luster, and chemical resistance. Copper and platinum metals were also used in the art of the ancient Incas.

Modern surface treatment technology has made it possible to develop and manufacture more versatile works of art and design. In addition to conventional electrolytic and chemical coatings, various effects and colors on the body to be coated can be created using the so-called selective coating, in which case only the desired part of the object is coated.

Electroforming is a method in which a metal coating is grown on the mold, which can be as thick as several millimeters. By removing the mold, a completely golden hollow object can be made, for example. The same technique is used e.g. in the manufacture of gold teeth. Electroforming with coating baths can be used to coat thick layers not only with electrically conductive materials but also with non-electrically conductive surfaces such as glass, wood, leather, etc.
